Rotterdam & Merwede - 2024

The *fish* Knows Everything By Katinka Versendaal rotterdam

This ongoing project is directed at exploring, mapping and visualizing the interdependent relationships between the human and more than human beings and entities and the effects of the changing environmental conditions in very specific, amphibian localities; in the case of the Netherlands, we focussed our attention to Rotterdam, its harbor, its surrounding industries, the Rhine Mouth and in particular the Merwede river, the Biesbosch, the fisherfolks and the more than human inhabitants of this area.

We started an examination of four more than human beings; the nearly extinct European Eel, the invasive American Crayfish, the for-sportfishing-released European Catfish and the – nowadays extinct in the European rivers, but one of the most common fishes – European Salmon, their stories and the human communities that share them.

The end results of this chapter of the project will be showcased during the upcoming Dutch Design Week 2024 in the form of a dinner, a small exhibition, a workshop program and a film program.

Join us for a movie date, where we feel our impact, hear the voices of ecosystems under stress, and learn from life forms that were here before us and may be here after us.

From foraging to fermentation, come to speculate together on radical conviviality through our workshop program.

Let’s embark on a culinary journey through taste, touch, smell, and storytelling, where we explore how eating can be a regenerative act that extends beyond our bodies and considers our relationship with all beings, ecosystems, and all the worlds within this world.

We hope to meet you during Dutch Design Week 2024.
